With its quiet streets meandering around the eastern bends of the Yarra
Park in Kew contains one of the most highly concentrated and certainly the best preserved collection of architect designed post-war houses in Melbourne, many in the so-called Melbourne Regional Style. Eight are listed on the Royal Australia Institute of Architects register of notable buildings of the 20th Century
, but dozens more were designed by architects who came to be among the most eminent in Australia. Throughout the 1950s and '60s the area offered exciting opportunities to a new generation of young architects filled with post-war optimism, undaunted by the steeply sloping sites and eager to capitalise on the river environment, commanding views and the modernist sensibilities of their clients.
Today scores of fabulous houses still nestle within their shady gardens, visible here and there through the treetops.
