Exploring England Studley Park Modern

Cradley Avenue

Cradley was the name of a house in Studley Park Road owned by Jane Miller, a daughter of Henry 'Money' Miller, one of Melbourne's richest financiers. On 8 Mar 1870 Jane, aged 30, married Thomas Aubrey BOWEN, doctor & oculist who was born 1837 in Cradley, England, hence the origin of the name of the Kew property and Cradley Avenue. Thomas Aubrey Bowen's father Presbyterian Minister William Bowen served at Cradley for 22 years. Thomas became a noted ophthalmic surgeon, whose contribution was important enough to be memorialised in the Aubrey Bowen Wing at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Morrison Place, East Melbourne.
